Ok on my 85 GL 5spd 4x4 wagon, 1.8 engine, I have a few things that aren't connected and I have pictures here below each description, maybe you guys can help me know where they go and stuff. Thanks, I appreciate it.

 

1. This vacuum hose, its connected to that thing near the passengers side strut, but the other end isnt connected anywhere, where does it go?

 

2. This hose is coming off the air cleaner box but the bottom isnt connected to anything, where is that supposed to go? I dont really see where its supposed to be connected to down there.

 

3. These 2 things sticking out from the front of the carb, theyre supposed to have vacuum hoses connected to them but obviously they dont. What goes where and from where? That vacuum hose with the red tape around it I think goes in one of them but someone taped it off for some reason...

#1 is for your cruise control, from the look of it anyways, i cant quite remember cause mine got yanked out when i was building the car.

Hm, I dont have cruise control though.

Hey, I just found out what #1 was on my car just the other day, it's been hanging there just like yours since I got my Subaru. It connects to a vacuum diaphram on your carb, it's on the pass. side of the carb and has a bluish-gray plastic rear housing. What it does is raise your idle when the A/C is on.

 

#2 is the same on my car too, I think it's supposed to be that way, it just goes down the driver's side of the engine and goes nowhere, and the end looks like it's never been on anything, it's not marred and has no marks like from a hose clamp or anything.

 

I'm not sure about #3, they don't look familiar.

The #3 is on the front of the carb under the air filter box.

Sure thing, I took some pics just a minute ago but I don't know how to get them on here. In answer to your question, nope my AC is dead too, I just like having everything hooked up right anyway.

 

One other thing is I think that the hoses in #2 should be switched, at least on my car they are, the one that goes nowhere should be where the lower-most hose is in your pic, and that hose should be where the nowhere hose is. They look like they connect in the same spot but the front connection goes into the air cleaner PCV chamber thing, and the other connection is just a metal tube that runs along the rear of the air cleaner and connects to a hose on the other side of the engine.

 

Lastly, I found those carb nozzles, the right one connects to the big hose on my charcoal canister, and the left one connects to a short hose that runs straight down and to the left to another vacuum tube coming out under the manifold.

Now that I think of it, anyone else have the nowhere hose? I'd like to know if mine is hooked up to the right place or if camelwagon's is right.

Okay, I examined my air cleaner and I definitely think they should be switched like mine. The hose that is on the bottom of your pic is the Air Suction Valve hose and needs to be connected where the nowhere hose is, the reason is that the suction valve needs to be able to suck in air from that pipe since it connects to the air cleaner and sucks in clean air.

 

I looked inside and that little chamber on the side of the air cleaner is blocked off by rubber flaps that won't let air get sucked out, but they will let air get sucked into the air cleaner. I think that nowhere hose is like an emergency air inlet, if the main intake passage gets blocked the extra suction will pull those little flaps back and allow air to be sucked in through the nowhere hose.

 

I know that doesn't make much sense but I'm obsessed with it now, I hope someone else can confirm or correct for me.

 

I tried hooking mine up like yours and the suction valve started making noise and the car idled a little weird.

Here's a pic of where my hoses are hooked up, normally mine hangs down right behind the alternator.

 

 

Here's a pic of those two nozzles on the carb. (if you look above you can see the hose with blue tape, that's the hose with a string on it below, you just can't see the tape.

 

 

Anyway, now that I've gotten that out of my system (can you tell I'm bored?) good luck on her. I'll check out your other post too.

Also can you take a pic when you get a chance of the 2 tubes in the front of the carb that I was wondering about? I gotta see what and where they go.

Here you go: this is the hose on the pass. side. It just goes straight down and a little left and hooks into one of the metal vauum lines coming out from under the manifold.

 

 

I'm pointing at the other hose in the pic below, it just goes to the canister.

 

 

Don't know if mine is smog legal or not, Kentucky isn't smog controlled. Anyway, good luck dude!

Hey 1985GLWAGON, here are some more pics I took. See how different our engines and carbs are, you dont have this little box thing thats circled or that sensor coming from the thermostat housing... At least from your pics it didnt look like you had them. And see where the hoses from my canister are connected? Pretty weird, I'm not sure if its right but it runs fine this way... hehe.

Anyways if anyone else has this setup on their engine, plese let me know cuz I still need to connect a few things. Thanks.

 

 

Camelwagon: Is your car Dual-Range 4x4 or just 4x4? That might be the difference, mine's DR. It does seem weird that two cars the same model year and features would have a bunch of different components, if it's not the 4x4 I don't know what else, I guess a mid-year setup change or something. When was yours made? Mine was in January '85

 

The other thing was about the pic right above in your last post, the one with all 4 hoses coming out of the canister. You know that big hose on the bottom? If you follow it from the canister it connects to a metal L-shaped line under the air cleaner, but if you follow the metal line it turns toward the carb. There should be a little section of rubber hose from the other end of the metal line to that driver's side nozzle on your carb. I think what you're missing is just that short piece of hose that has the red string on it in my pics.

See, here's the metal L-shaped line I was talking about. The hose with blue tape is the one from the canister, the one with red string is the one to the carb. The metal line just connects the two.

 

 

I took a pic of the passenger side asv as well. Here's a pic of the hose coming out of the air cleaner and down to the black round thing.

 

 

Here's a close-up of where it connects to the engine, right next to that metal exhaust tube.

 

 

Hope that gives you a clearer picture of what's supposed to be there. But, like you said could be different between cars, who knows!

It looks like you also have an unconnected nozzle right above your finger, on the air box..??

Ok I think I got it finally. So the blue one is the same as the red string one that goes to the nozzle on the right that I have nothing connected to?? So I just need a piece of hose from the metal piece to the nozzle.

Ok so then the other end of the red tape one goes to the canister also right?

Yeah, I just disconnected a hose to take the pic since it was in the way. Looks like your other 3 canister hoses are just fine, it's just the big one that should go to the carb.
