bad mileage

Featured Replies

My 1996 Legacy Outback with the EJ25 has been getting really bad gas mileage, i have recently changed the air and fuel filters and the oil is fresh, plus i am getting a vibration on acceleration between 20mph and 30 mph please. maybe they are connected, maybe not. please shoot me some info. thanks, Jeff

I don't really think I can help; I'm sure the other members here can. Some mpg figures and a more detailed description of the "vibration" would probably be helpful though.

*please help this member*

How bad? 20 MPG? What kind of driving do you do? city highway? Are you lead footed?

i am pretty easy on the gas, the mileage is about 200-225 per tank i just cant figure it out, i tried injecter cleaner but its stil bad. maybe bad plugs?

When you say "per tank" how many gallons are we talking about?

Your tank is 15+ gallons but if you have a bad fuel gauge your "per tank" could be 10-11 gallons (@ 200-225 miles that says your getting 21 to 22 MPG). You have to get a number of gallons per milage traveled for an accurate estimate.

Also vibration could be a bad tire or alignment, both of which can effect MPG.

have the transmission serviced and flushed.. IE, change the filter and fluid. should help with your problem..

i'm gettin about 310 miles to a tank in my outback :)

Hmmm. Could you offer an RPM Range? If it's not doing in a particular RPM range, it may indeed be tranny related. In that case, do as that dude said. Fluid change and Tranny Filter. If you do the filter, you should only need to do the external filter. I just changed mine this weekend. $31. DEALER ONLY on that filter.

DOH!!! Not sure if that version of 4EAT has the External spin-on filter.

If it IS RPM related, I would start with your power. Grounds. If you're not sure how to do the ground mod... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42606

If you do that and your prob is not solved. Check your batt at an autoparts store. If that's OK. I would try cleaning your MAF sensor. I have been using B&G 402 Brake and contact cleaner. O2 sensor safe. Let me know where this takes you.

A guess, and this is just a guess, is that you need an alignment worse then I do. The shimmy is what raised my eyebrow.

I just tried to figure out my MPG. I was on E and only went 245 miles, I was a little concerned. I only was able to put 10.3 gallons back in. Either my gas gauge is off or they're giving me a 5.6 gallon reserve. I'm tempted to drive until i see the gas light which i've never seen besides my owners manual.

96 does not have the external filter, only the one in the pan.

Also, you really need to figure out the actual mileage. Fill the tank, reset the odometer, then the next time you fill the tank, divide the miles driven by the gallons put in.

Example:

Yesterday I re-filled my 96 GT wagon with 8.169 gallons after 216.1 miles. 216.1 / 8.169 = 26.45MPG

Now, my gas gauge read 1/4 tank, but as evidenced by the amount of gas I put in, I still had close to half a tank, and could have gone something like 390 miles on my tank.

In my case, city driving and higway driving are worlds apart. I made some calculations recently and pure highway is always around 30 miles per gallon (makes me think the engine is running OK) and pure city is almost half of that: around 17 miles per gallon. Conclusion: i walk, bicycle, and use public transport as often as I can in the city and use the subie mainly for out of town trips. As of yeserday, gas was 1.40 Can a liter. That's $4.24 USD a gallon.
