Sweet82
Mad Max nuked an emission part over the weekend. Details, I removed a long section of hose from the bottom of the disk shaped part. It looked as though it didn't belong and made it sit funny compared to other 84's. There was some sort of metal object (valve?) in the hose I removed. I took the car on a 50 mile cruise and found the plastic disk (part of the emissions) nuked it's self. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=7862 Pictures worth a thousand words... Questions, What is this part? What does it do? Is it necessary? Can it be plugged? Will the car run right if I plug it? Not worried about emission testing... Turbone
Ewww, hope none of that got sucked into your carb, its a common malady with those air suction valves. As to removing it, I dont know. I think Edrach and a few others have more experiance with them than me.
Sweet82
I didn't pop off the air filter but I'd assume the filter would keep that melted plastic crap out? ...wouldn't it...
ShawnW
Nope, this air is already filtered so it comes up into the filter box inside the filter. Look in the USRM for the Air suction valve article. I have a couple brand new "silencers" lying around if you need it. Somebody here mentioned you could stick a quarter in there somewhere to fix this at least as a temp fix.
Humble Nuto 53
my reed valve broke which melted the plastic and i only noticed cause the idle went up due to melted gunk on the butterfly. so once i chiseled that out i removed all the pollution junk. pulled the intake manifold and only left a line to the brake booster and one to the distributor. unscrewed the tube, sawed it off, just the other side of the threads, stuck a nickle down in the recess, and screwed it back together. worked well. arch is still driving it like that i think. subarunuts
You can do the quarter trick, and put one in the fitting for the pipe that goes from the AIS valve to the head - but if you really want to do it right, unscrew the pipe from the spacer on the head, cut the pipe to remove the end, and weld it up with some filler (I use a fender washer of carefully selected size) to make it a plug instead. Then it can all just go away. Or to avoid the welding, remove the spacers, and get an EA82 y pipe instead. The AIS serves to bring in fresh oxygen to the cat. It's needed to make the catalyst work. Basically useless unless you care about such things, or want to pass emmissions. Introducing the oxygen also makes it backfire more easily - really have to get after the leaks in the exhaust, and make sure the mixture and timing are right to prevent afterburn in the muffler.
