September 9, 200520 yr Ok heres another freakin problem with my GL. When I first start it it doesnt want to run, idles bad and finally dies. So I always have to turn the idle up and then it will run half way descent. Then when it warms up the idle is too high so i gotta lower it. SUCH A PAIN. Whats up with it? Thanks guys.
September 9, 200520 yr Your choke, which also controls the fast idle, is probably faulty or misadjusted.
September 9, 200520 yr Yep, definitely the choke, mine does the exact same thing, I just hold the pedal down a little until it warms up and it idles fine. I hate chokes, i've never been able to adjust them right, even when I bought my Edelbrock carb brand new for my chevy it never seems to work right.
September 9, 200520 yr Author Hm thanks. So does it have anything to do with the cold idle screw? Where is that screw? And how do i adjust the choke? Thanks.
September 9, 200520 yr Get a vernier throttle that you can set for whatever throttle position you want. Then you can set it wherever it needs to be to keep the idle up at cold temps, then push it in when it warms up. A friend of mine has installed these on a few old cars and trucks (70's and 80's), actually hooking the cable to the gas pedal. It works great for warming them up on cold mornings -- and even as a crude cruise control (just remember to hit the red button before you put your foot on the clutch to downshift, or the engine rev's will go through the roof....). About $25, and an hour or two to install.
