Hey everyone. I'm so glad I found this website. I belong to one for my Jeep and the message boards help out A LOT!! I love em.

I just bought an '87 GL wagon 5 speed with 4wd. First question is, how do i get the back seat to fold down. I found the latches on the top, but is there something for the bottom that I can't find? Second question, I've got a lot of oil on the engine. The car sat for a few years before i bought it and i do not know any history on it. It runs great, good oil pressure and does not over heat or smoke. Anyways, can I get some sugestions on where the most likely places that it is coming from. It almost seems like it is power steering fluid, because why else would oil be soaking everything up there. But i also cant see how how so mush oil could come from just that. Any ideas? Thanks

the seats are probably just stuck there's only the top latch. As for the oil? if your not leaking it it's probably just someone spilt some(alot) and never cleaned it up. you could check powersteering fluid everynow and than as with all the other fluids. There could have been a leak in the past that was never cleand up also.

Theres a strap for a latch of the bottom seat, its in the center and might be down in the crack. May have to stick your hand down there and fish around for it. The oil leakage is common for a Soob, yours could be the PS lines, try tightening them.

I would also consider changing the timing belts, they need changed every 60K. Done worry about the engine if one breaks, its a non interference engine. It will just leave you stranded

Welcome to the club! I love my 87 GL.

The engines will leak an amazing amount of oil at times. The rubber seals are, in your case, 18 years old, and just don't do a great job of sealing anymore.

I did a writeup a while back on things you should fix, or at least consider fixing, or just know.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions! They're great cars.

All old subaru's seem to leak oil... My '89 is a lucky one that the shop actually couldn't believe was a Loyale, because it didn't leave any drips. One thing that I've taken to doing is powerwashing the engine and as much as the undercarriage as I can reach with engine brite or something like that, and the steam wand at the carwash, once a year. It helps alot to know whether a leak you see is the same old one, or a new one that you should be worried about. Also makes is easier to work on. Just make sure you don't wash grease out of any seals on the drivetrain when doing this (don't directly blast them with the high pressure wand).
