EA-81 5 speed hold up behind an EJ motor?

Featured Replies

Im thinking of upgrading my 83 subaru to a 2.5 liter RS motor. Will a stock 5 speed front wheel drive tranny from around the same year as my car hold up under the power? I don't really feel like going through the hassle of turning my car into an all wheel drive.

You might be best off in finding a 2wd EJ transmission from a early Legacy or Impreza. There maybe clearance issues with it and you would need to come up with custom axles; however it and the clutch will be able to handle the power.

What year cars should i look at to find this? Im probably just going to put up a wanted ad on this site but still..i need to know what im asking for..lol.

My concern for your 2wd only is that in any kind of weather, dry included, hooking up and getting traction is hard with all the extra power, 4wd has come in real handy on hills and rainy roads.

I'm pretty sure that the EA82 5 speed has been couple to the ER27, which is 145 hp, successfully. Does anybody know if the EA81 tranny is the same? If it's not, it might be easier and/or cheaper to find the EA82 tranny than the EJ tranny.

I am actually going to do a similar conversion (EJ22T) into what is currently an 82 sedan 2wd and for the amount of power increase having 4wd will be a much better idea. Besides the fact that switching rear ends isn't to difficult, just a little obnoxious.

I have a 2wd auto tranny from a 94 impreza with 99k mi. if you're interested.

i have ran the er27 on a ea81 4 speed dual range for at least 10k miles. it had around 150 stock. its freshened up a bit, with 2.5 inch exhaust and open intake. so its gotta be pushin a little more.

the tranny held fine. and after i got a good clutch, that held fine too (8 7/8 inch flywheel/clutch)

seems like the 5speed internals are the same material/style/strength as the ea82 stuff.

once you hook up, it should go like a raped ape. no different than all those turbo vtech kids fartin around town.
