stuck water pump

Featured Replies

Hello all... this is the next of many posts as I work my way through an EA82 rebuild. Anyone who recognizes this from the other posts might be relieved to know, as I am, that I got the stripped bolts out of the cams and the pulleys are off and I'm ready to get at the head gaskets et cetera.

What's hanging me up now is that I have removed all of the bolts holding on the water pump and the thing won't budge. Like it's cemented into place. I have a new one to relace it with, but, man, even with leverage, if I grab ahold of the end of that thing and try pulling in any direction, it just won't move.

My next idea would be to try to wedge somthing in where the seal is and pry it. Logic tells me that's not such a good idea. I need the next one to seal well too. I there a trick to this?

There's quite a few bolts holding it on. Tripple check very closely that you have them all off.

Use a rubber or lead mallet to tap it off.

there should be 5 bolts holding it on.

With 5 bolts in your hand, and triple-checking that they're the 5 correct bolts (all 10mm), it should come off fairly easily. A rubber mallet should be able to break it loose.

If a rubber mallet doesn't work, and you plan on replacing the water pump anyways, you can stick a pry bar into the inlet and give it a good yank. If you're going to do this, be ABSOLUTELY SURE that every bolt is out.
