OK, before I undertake the variety of oil leak fixes suggested on this site, I'd like to start out with as clear a picture of where the leaks are actually coming from and then start the project with as clean a work area as possible. What's the easiest way, other than have someone else do it, to clean and any precautions? I have a gravel driveway, close to my well and adjacent to a wetland so I'd prefer not eventually drinking the runoff. Are there any "safe" substances and techniques?

If the car is still drivable, take it to the local carwash to clean it off. You can get 90% of the crud off and out of the engine compartment area. If you're pulling the engine afterwards, you can use a foaming oven cleaner,(just don't leave it on to long, it will attack the aluminum). Used some Kingsford grill cleaner on Jim's (86subaru) engine when we did the reseal on it, seemed to work real good. Also, if the engine is out, you can use some kerosene to clean it. I have half of a plastic 55 gallon drum for a parts cleaning tub, works well for Sube engines.......

Which I suggest. High pressure sprayer, no mess to clean up. Take out your spare tire if it's still in the engine compartment. I sprayed my engine down really good one time and thought things were pretty clean until I took my spare out and couldn't believe how much gunk I missed.

I use brake cleaner to really hit the nasty stuff. Then I come back with gear oil and steel wool for aluminum parts or gear oil and a rag for all palstic and rubber. Keeps your engine bay shiney for weeks!
