My 1992 loyale had a nuetral switch on its 5spd tranny. The dual range I swapped in out of a 1986 didn't. The spfi computer is now complaining of Code 51, which pertains to the switch. It seems that I can't swap the switch in because the hole for it was never drilled and tapped on the tranny. What should I do?

I know this isn't exactly answering your question but why don't you just drill and tap it yourself in the same spot as your old tranny? Also, I am looking at doing the same conversion and was wondering what exactly you had to do to make it work...does it just swap right in?

not all d/r trannies are like that. I'm not sure of the exact cutoff, but my '88 had it on the tranny, and my '85 had it on the clutch pedal. I swapped 'em (the '85 had way fewer miles), and it works fine, just didn't plug it in. yea, my CEL is on, but all my cars have the CEL on. I'd be worried if it turned off!

 

I'm going to try to attach the two wires, maybe that will get it to shut up.

I should go and find out if the switch closes in gear or closes in nuetral, then wire it to be in gear. Or mabe wire it to an extra switch on the clutch. It already has the clutch interlock switch. The tranny came out of a carbedcar, so It doesn't have any of this sensor crud on it.

Uh, don't you have to wire it in the nuetral position to let the car start? I thought that that was what the nuetral safety was for... I still don't know why they thought it was necessary to put it on there at all. I've already got my foot on the clutch and the parking brake on....

 

Now automatic transmissions, those ARE dangerous -- everytime I drive one I end up jamming my left foot on the brake and locking the tires up.

yea, that's the idea, but mine never worked (on either car) the only negative effect, seems to be the CEL

You should just be able to splice in a switch into the wiring harness where the old neutral switch was. I'm sure all it is is a common circuit. When the clutch is pushed all the way in, a signal completes a circuit to the computer.

 

Ideally you would be making a neutral start cancel switch (on newer cars where they wont start unless the clutch is all the way on the floor)

The clutch has its own switch to lock out the starter. It only starts if the pedal is on the floor. Its actually turned into a bad habit, turn the key, punch the pedal to the floor to crank it and go. The nuetral switch doesn't seem to be for safety, its just for the ECU. Not quite sure what it uses it for, but It seems to want it. The CEL is pissing me off, as is the other issues making it run richer n'hell. Will the ECU acecpt it being constantly in ger (wires twisted together), or will it figure it out and throw the CEL back on?

just put a little bit of electrical tape over the light....I've been known to do this
