vacuum test

Featured Replies

What do they mean by doing a vacuum test on a EA 81 head? What does it tell you ?cracked head or bad valves or what?

Thanks in advance .

Jude

I haven't heard of "vacuum testing". Could it instead be pressure testing?

Dont really know.I sent a guy a pair of heads and he told me he took them to an engine shop where they told him one was good but the other failed a vacuum test.I'm still no wiser.

Thanks for the reply,

Jude

(P.S.) To Northwet ; I just got back from a trip to your part of the world . Beautiful countryside, had a great time.

i think he meant a pressure test, you block off all the water passages then you pressurize it to 9 psi, and it has to hold the pressure. If it doesnt it means it has a crack in the head.

Nipper,

Thank you kindly.

Jude

vacum test at a machine shop means that they have a device with a foam pad that pulls a vacum, you place it over each port, intake or exhaust, and pull a vacum, if it dosnt hold than that means that valve is leaking, needs a valve job, seats ground and valves refaced, sometimes valves will burn and need to be replaced or seats will need to be replaced, rarely the head will have a prob like electrolisis and cannot be repaired, machine shops will usuily pressure test 1st to look for cracks and then vacum test to check valve condtion
