Loud Clicking Noise In EA81

Featured Replies

Hey,

Okay, whenever I drive my brat there is an extremely loud clicking sound; it wont go away. Does anyone else have this problem or know possibly what it is? Do the EA81's have solid rockers?

Thanks,

Ryan

is the noise coming from the engine or drivetrain?maybe the cv`s are shot?

What year is your brat? An 85 and later model would have come with a hydro lifter engine.

Also hydraulic if its a '83 or newer automatic.

most likely an axel. does it ever get better/worse? are any of your axel boot torn? old subarus eat front axels up.

does the sound change with the rpms? does it change when you turn sharp?

It is also possible that you are stripping out the splines on one of your front hubs.

It is an 85', the click increases with the engine rpm. It is definately comming from the engine itself, not the wheels or axles. I have heard acoupple things which may be causing it, i will check thoes.. Thank You all!

i hav e a '88 sportswagon and i experience the same niose, when the revs are up the noise ticking increases in speed, its not always there but it comes and goes when it pleases....any solutions??

Ive talked to CCR, they rebuild subaru engines. I was told that the EA-81 engine has solid rockers, therefore one of the rockers or the valves probally needs adjusted. Prior to owning my brat I had a 99' Mitsubishi Mirage which had a clicking noise which came and left when it pleased. In its case I was told that it was a stuck rocker, or that the oil had caused sludge build up around one of the rockers causing it to stick. In that case I was recommended to find an engine detergant which you add to your oil prior to changing it. My Brat clicks all the time and the click just speeds up with the higher RPM. I am going to see if the lifters or valves need adjusted this weekend. I will let you know if it gets the clicking to stop!

Thanks,

Ryan

not if it an 85. all 85 and laters have hyd lifters.

What year is it? Manual/auto?

bloody hell...does anyone agree on anything? It is a 1985 Subaru Brat 4x4 carburated EA-81 engine and a 4 speed manual transmission. I was told by ccr that it has solid lifters...

Most ea81s have solid lifters, because most are pre '85. Since yours is an '85, it has hydraulic lifters (unless its not the original engine).
