GOOSE56
Hi I Bought A New 2006 Legacy It Now Has 500 Miles On It. Since I Bought This Car I Noticed A Burning Smell [oil?] I Thoght It Was Just A Burn Off Smell Because It Was New. But The Smell Hasn't Diminished Like I Thought It Would. Is This Common? Frosty Mug
HiI Bought A New 2006 Legacy It Now Has 500 Miles On It. Since I Bought This Car I Noticed A Burning Smell [oil?] I Thoght It Was Just A Burn Off Smell Because It Was New. But The Smell Hasn't Diminished Like I Thought It Would. Is This Common? I have the same problem with my 2005 Baja and I’m getting sick of smelling it. My service advisor said it was cosmoline and according to him it is a common problem. If you take it in, please let us know what the outcome is.
friendly_jacek
it's very common for subs to have exhaust overspray with rustproofing. the smell persists for months. every new owner goes through this. Edit: if you see lots of smoke then its a diffrent story, LOL!

BShow
If you have a manual transmission, this could also be the clutch burning if you hold it too long, or ride it.
dbennett78
It is indeed cosmoline (chemical they spray on the alloys to prevent corrosion). When we started driving our new outback up a mountain it actually started smoking from the engine. Took it to the dealer right after and he said the same thing. The burning smell goes away gradually and should be gone after around 3000 miles are so.
