sputters in the rain

Featured Replies

The past few months my 97 legacy outback has started hesitating while I'm driving on the highway after about 30 min. I have to give it full gas to keep going or it will stall out; when I pull off the highway the car stalls out easily...have to roll thru stop signs. I've had the computer thing done @ auto zone + o2 sensors/tune up done...still happens. The car cures itself each time after a few days and runs like a reg subaru. It only seems to happen when it's raining. Any suggestions before I have the car repaired piece by piece?

usually caused by old plug wires, but also sounds like a fuel pressure problem. ed

could be a cracked distributor cap....this would let in moisture, and the crack may be very small

my 86 dl wagon did the same thing , i had gotton wires that you do your self ,and one of the ends were not vey tight , so check or replace the wires , cap, rotor ,

Sorry guys, but there's no distributor on a 97 Legacy. So maybe the plug wires.

o wow, my bad....I should have mentioned I dont even own a sube....yet

sounds like a bad ground to me.

water is getting on it in the rain.. and shorting it out.

that's my best guess.

check all of your ground wires.

Wait until it gets dark and then go out and start your car and move to the darkest place on your property. Turn off your headlights and open the hood. Rev the engine and look for little arcs. If you don't see anything get a squirt bottle of water of a hose and gently spray water around the ignition compenents until you see an arc or it starts to sputter when you rev it. Most likely is bad plug wires agrivated by the moisture of rain. Could also be grounds, but I've seen several cars that had your symptom with bad wires.

Had a similar condition on my 97 Legacy.

Was a combination of wires/Ignition coil. Once replaced...all is back in order

Total spent ~ $150.00
