November 4, 200520 yr Hi everyone. I am stuck at will, being that I have an 87 with high and low 4wd. I love it. It's my second Subaru. Currently, stuck against my will at the mechanic ( a Ford man, yikes!) with a constantly cracking distributer cap. Will be looking for some help here, but later, as my first favorite thing to drive is horses, and the team is waiting for me to hitch. So will be back later to check around the site for info on why the caps keep a'bustin. This is a huge site. If anyone can show a newbie some links to where I should start looking, I'd appreciate it. November 4, 200520 yr Sounds Kinda strange.... I've never broken a cap yet. Worn out bunches but never cracked any. I the cap being installed correctly? Sounds stupid but there is that little tab must be in the right spot. Are all the caps cracking in the same place? Are they all the same brand? I'm confused, Oh ya, welcome to the board. November 4, 200520 yr Welcome to the board. I haven't heard of the cap-busting problem. You might try using the search function, though.
November 4, 200520 yr Haven't read on here of that problem either, with a 'Roo that is. Can say (ahem), Ford had that problem for a while. Seems the parts books listed the wrong rotor for whatever cap, basically the 2.0, 2.3 engines. Could be your problem seeing as you have an '87 w/4 speed DR tranny. Sounds like a BRAT or Hatch to me, and some of the Parts places just look at the year, not the model when pulling parts for a 'Roo. Could be they gave you the wrong rotor, as in to wide or to tall. November 5, 200520 yr Author Thanks for the welcomes. I am going to search around the site now, and see if I can cypher this out.... It all went down like this.... guages went dead. car missing badly....fuse blown-replaced -blown one of the holes where you put the plug wire had a chip out of it, replaced cap, and rotor, after auto parts store finally delivered correct rotor... new alternator... (meanwhile, in the back of the car, new gas tank, fuel pump & filter...) still missing... new cap & rotor....good for 10 miles or so...cracked from one side to the other... new cap and rotor....repeat. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I am told by a friend that I have no voltage regulator. Personally, I think I need one!.....Off to search site... 'tis a 5 speed btw hi/lo 4wd winter is coming, I must get ready to be... stuck at will!
November 8, 200520 yr Author Thanks, everybody for your replies. The caps are busted straight across from pole to pole. Auto parts store did send wrong rotor at first, but that got fixed later on. Have searched around here some, and from what I am reading, and my mechanics thoughts, it may be a grounding prob. Am thinking about renting a dolly and hauling it to a real foreign car mechanic, as my regular guy seems not to want to fool with it. Ka-jing$$$. Am going to go see him after I vote. Still stuck against my will. Any more ideas?
