Vanguard
'92 Subaru Legacy L AWD wagon non-turbo I think it's a 2.2L engine I had this info a few years ago but those brain cells have died since then. Which type of engine do I have? And for when I forget again, is there someplace for lookup online where I can check again? I can add it to my Favorites so it won't matter if I forget where is the site. Is it true the interference engines for Subaru starting showing up in '95 or '97 models (so mine would be exempt and be non-interference)? Legacy777
You have a 2.2 liter engine. It is non-interference.
idosubaru
interference 2.2 liter motors started in 97. anything prior is non-interference, including all 1.8 and 2.7 liter motors as well. there are on-line resources but dont' know that i'd trust them, sometimes they are convoluted. dealer or here is your best bet to find out. Snowman
Austin told me a simple method for determining this: If the spark plugs are oriented at an angle to the heads, it is non-interference. If the plugs come straight out from the top of the head, it is interference.
Vanguard
Thanks for the info, especially about the spark plugs which I'll be replacing next weekend so I'll see if they are angled or not.
edrach
Unfortunately, the sparkplug trick does not work for determining which engine you have. Your '92 2.2L is definitely a non-interference and the interference engine did not start until the '97 model year. I have a '97 Impreza with the 2.2L engine and it is most likely interference even though it has a manufacture date of Oct. '96. Do a search on non-interference; this was discussed ad nauseum about 3 months ago here. Here's one link; there are others. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40824&page=1&pp=10&highlight=non-interference
