EJ22T Carbon in Turbo

Hey everyone thanks to you I got my 2.2 running nicely now after the coil problem which was causing it to run rich, (wasn't firing on 1+2 once warm) the tailpipe was carbonned up pretty bad, well now I am thinking the turbo might also have a lot of carbon on it which I would like to remove.

 

Any suggestions on how I could get the carbon off the blades without removing the Turbo, would a spray type cleaner or seafoam be safe?

The carbon would only be on the turbine side. Just run some sea foam through. I wouldn't really worry about it though. Turbine temps get pretty high and cook stuff off.

i dont think this would be carbon but might be called soot,a nice drive down the interstate would probbally do it. ed

Is it possible to have an oil seal leak in the turbo?

Texan, I believe the turbo uses a plain bearing, so wear will see this bearing leaking oil to both sides.

Yes it's possible that you can have an oil seal leakage. I'm not sure the type of oil seal that's in there though.

I don't think I have any oil leakage, just concerned about the Turbo blades having carbon on them and possibly throwing them out of balance. Plugs 3-4 had a lot of carbon on them, the muffler and tailpipe were black.
