And holy CRAP theres alot of stuff on these EA82's. Only other motor Ive done was a EA81, and those are cake. I sure hope I can get all this stuff back together on the new block... and running. We'll see

And dont forget. Lots and lots of gaskets.! Nice work. I remember seeing that engine like 9months ago (am I right?) How about some 11 to 1 pistons as well Ahh why not, go the whole hog and do 14 to 1 with copper gaskets.

 

Or build it back as stock. (is this a turbo EA81, or N/A?)

This is a EA82 Turbo. I will be putting a high compression block in from a N/A MPFI or SPFI or whatever I can find with the lowest milage at the junkyard.

 

It will be about 9.0 or 9.5:1 (depending on wether you ask Caleb or WJM :-P )

hahaha, good stuff. Good luck with it mate. High comp turbo engines are something I want. Maybe someday soon when I get a XT I can have some fun. That engine bay look(s/ed) sweet.

Just curious, how did all the bearings look? (Aside from the ones on the rod that flew apart).

That loks like a turbo motor. how did you blow it up? Too much boost or was it just age and to much rpm's?

It had been burning oil for about a week prior to its demise. I believe there was a bad ring or something. I attempted to take it on a road trip, and about 80 miles out I believe it finally ran out of oil an well... crank bearings kinda need oil.

That's a typical oil film bearing.

 

The oil is injected into the bearings, and the crankshaft/rods/etc "float" on the layer of oil. If the oil pressure is low, or the oil runs out, or gets too hot, or (any number of things that cause it to allow metal on metal contact), the two metal surfaces will make contact and will scrape/gouge the bearing & wear it down to the copper surface (they should be somewhat shiny).

if you want to tear it down the restof the way you would need to put the case halfs back together, remove the 14mm alen plugs(one is behind the crankcase breather cover) and the remove clips and slide out the pins.

then you could see what it really looks like inside.

or you can just scrap it and start over.

I thiink i'll just remove the bolts at the connecting rod and crank, then remove the crank and push the pistons out the top of the block (side, front, whatever).

 

The one good side will make a nice pencil holder for my office
