The stock motor in an 85 gl is usually the EA82 carbed motor.

EA82 [carbed, dunno about your US models] is the 85's engine. Should fit right in..

You can put in a SPFI motor from a newer one and just use your carbed intake.Compression ratio is 9.5 : 1 instead of 9 : 1, not a big gain, but very noticable and won't cost any extra $.
