December 20, 200520 yr Apparently, they used 3 different types of automatic transmissions in the Gen 1s Aisin Warner M41 Aisin Warner M41A Jatco L3N71B I thought they were all the same. Anybody have an idea on this? Thanks, Todd
December 20, 200520 yr Ummm... what kind of idea do you want? Not that I am likely to provide you with much info, but you never know.
December 20, 200520 yr Author If they did indeed use 3? If these were it? Was one particular one the main one used? How can I tell which one I have? Are the 2 with the same name basically the same?
December 21, 200520 yr what year are you talking. or year range. i can lookin my factory parts books and see the application. i have 68-79 parts books so i should have it covered....
December 21, 200520 yr Trans Part number 340258710 this is for the trany case...without the front diff... covers years. 1977(stage1) and 1977(stage2), 1978 HT, 2d,4d sw(DL) 340253600 1975 HT GF, Coupe GL, 2dr DL, 4dr DL, SW DL, no auto trany listed in my book for 1972, 1973(stage1) 1973(stage2) 1973(stage3) 1974 all the pix of auto tranys i could find for 75-79 they all looked the same. some part numbers were differnt. and may just be superceded. anyway i hope this helps.
December 21, 200520 yr Author Thanks for looking and your time. I'm mainly interested in 77-79. I can't seem to cross the actual trans manufacturer with the year/Part #. Todd
December 21, 200520 yr Well if this helps, the only Gen1 auto I ever scrapped out was from a 78. Execpt for the bellhousing, I could not tell a difference between it and a Gen2 2wd Auto.
December 21, 200520 yr If I were a betting man (I am not ), I would say that if you had one it would probably be the JATCO unit, as it was used in the later cars. The M41 and M41A are probably near-twins (with each other); some relatively minor refinement. (BTW, the JATCO core was used in several other Japanese cars.) Parts stores have asked me which 3AT I was buying a pan gasket for, as they are different shapes. This may be your best external distinguishing characteristic. If you take the pan off, the valve body should be marked with transmission ID.
December 21, 200520 yr I'm pretty sure the M series was from '74 - '77 stage I.It's shown in the '74 Auto Trans SM Hope that helps. If that tranny was the "A" then I'm guessing the M41 was the Japanese version. That looks like any stage I auto that I can recall, doesn't it?
