December 30, 200520 yr if i take an EA82 crank to a machine shop can they measure/test it for me to see if it's in specifications? seems like too many damn lobes and weird shapes to measure accurately but those machinists do crazy things. what year were they offered up to. i've seen some EA82's listed as 1993, they made them that long?
December 30, 200520 yr 1994 Loyales used the EA82. The crank can be checked for tolerances and trueness. Any good machine shop can check it out.
December 30, 200520 yr An automotive machine shop can check it for you. The EA82 was made through 94. Depending on what you want to check, you might just want to go to the auto parts store and ask for some plastigage. It's a plastic that deforms as you torque the caps and you read the thickness to determine the clearances. It's pretty easy to use.
December 30, 200520 yr That plastigauge is what the machine shop will probably use. For clearances between parts.
December 30, 200520 yr Yes a good engine shop can check a crank. They will check for straightness, scoring of bearing jornals, and whether the jornals are round or egg-shaped. If it's close to tolerances, the jornals can be polished. A crank can be re-ground and you would need under-sized bearings. I've had a couple cranks ground, but opted a few times for a new crank, mainly due to what the engine was being built for.
December 30, 200520 yr A good machine shop can even spray weld a crank to add material to a journal if one of them is overly worn.
