Is it clutch related or something else

Clutch, or something else...

 

This is what I have. My 2000 Outback seems to have some problems for the last month or so. Sometimes, not always, only in second, third and sometimes fourth gear. When I put it in gear and if I accelerate slowly it is almost always ok. When I try to accelerate fast it seems like something is skipping. It is lasting only second or two, the rpm on the engine stays the same. I'm not sure if its the clutch or something else.

 

If it was the clutch, and if I allow it to slip multiple times, should I be able to smell it?

 

I had a trusted mechanic look at it, and he agrees with me that if this was clutch problem it should smell. He checked it on the computer and everything looks ok. He said that he also checked the suspension and that looked good as well.

 

At this point, I can only dive it and see what happens next. Any suggestions?

Clutch "judder" or shudder is a common problem in that year.

 

It is normally confined to starting out in first gear though.

 

The fix is a new clutch and p.plate

Actually slipping shows up first in the upper gears, by the time it shows up in first gear your clutch is freid. No you cant always smell the clutch slipping in the upper gears because your moving. TryTarting the car from a dead start in third gear, the car should buck and stall. If you can do it your clucth is on its way out. The good news is that it just starting. HOw many miles on this car?

You are talking about a totally different situation

 

If you need proof I will provide it.

 

I own one of these with less than 40 k on it.

 

I have researched it extensively.

 

I have been driving clutch propelled cars since..... well a long time

 

normally getting over 100 kmi on a clutch

 

you want to differ please use the instructions I provide in my original post

 

then come back and post your proof

er um i am not here to challange you, i am here to offer suggestions like everyone else,.

Since you wish to point out quaifications:

Im 43, been driving sticks since I was 16, and have torn apart many a drivetrain and rebuilt them. I have been pulling a wrench since I could pick one up next to my father, who was a navy mechanic. And for the record, since you sem so well informed, clutches do not propel cars, Engines propel cars, clutches dont, they just provide a emas for disconectiing the propulsion source to allow one to change the gear ratio and allow for one to stop at traffic lights.

i also have a degree in automtive engineering.

 

My last stick shift car, a subaru, had 180,000 MILES on the original clutch. i regularly get over 130, 000 miles or more on a clutch

Now i may have been wrong, and ill be the first to admit it, but i would suggest if you have information, help the poor guy out instead of trying to

make me look bad, personally i dont care how i look :) From the links it looks like there is a fix, but still requires taking the car apart.

Thanks for all the links and all the information. After few weeks of looking into this issue, the Tranquil kit almost fits perfect in to the puzzle.

 

If anyone knows if this kit is something approved by Subaru of America please let me know. Regardless, my first phone call on Tuesday will be to SoA to see what else they have to say about their clutch design. It blows my mind that with so many people being unhappy with their manual transmissions, SoA is just sitting quite.

I would like to hear more about the symptoms.

 

If the rpm don't rise more than normal then the clutch isn't slipping. And I agree that you wouldn't smell it at speed.

 

It might be worth replacing the transmission mount, when they go soft the allow the gearbox to move around to much and that could cause "skipping".
