January 14, 200620 yr I have a 99 Forester that recently had both rear wheel bearings replaced. I noticed today while driving in the snow that the ABS is not working. Could something have been screwed up during the wheel bearing repair???? It's possible there is something wrong with the brake system or wheel sensors that interfere's with the ABS. I'd take it back and have them examine it. Likely some additional 'bleeding' (air removal) needs to be done to the lines. Any other problem is likely just coincidental. There MAY be a TSB or recall for the late 90s ABS. If you're dealing with a dealership, ask them about it. But I THINK it was to correct a slight delay in engagement - not a failed condition.
January 14, 200620 yr If the light is on, the dealership should be able to pull a code and determine why it's not working. I've driven my dad's forester through the snow, and had the abs light come on, and it went away after the snow melted off what ever part it was pissing off.
January 16, 200620 yr The ABS light is not coming on. What does that mean?????The ABS light normally comes on when there is a system fault. Under any circumstance, it should at least come on for a second or two when the engine is first started, as a test. Does it? --OB99W
