Vanagon, VW bug... whatever

Featured Replies

Bugs are air cooled, most vanagons are water cooled (I think 83 or 84 was the last year for air cooled vanagons) so the logistics of putting a water cooled engine in is a lot easier (Although it can be done in a bug)

Lots of ingenius people out there have done it. Its not impossible the big difference in the conversions is that theres a HUGE aftermarket for the air cooled bug engine, such that doing the ej22 isnt as much of a no brainer as a Vanagon conversion.

Wasn't there someone here that did that? he needed to shorten the oil pan, but he got it to fit, and he said it pooped and git like a bat out of heck

Some times called "Jokers" in England, also called Samba's in Africa. VW flat nosed cab forward van with rear engine. From '80's to 90's in the US and Canada they were called Vanagon's.

Yep "ute" as you call it was a double cab (carry-all/pick-up) here in the states and they are VERY RARE and a good example is worth $$$$$$!!

"Snotrocket" was his handle but he changed it to something else and I cant remember what.

Do believe he changed his handle to NUG.

Yep. You need to fabricate a ton of stuff. I recommend getting a mig welder and getting acquainted with it intimately.

If you can put a 2.2 in a Vanagon, whats stopping me from putting a 2.2 into a VW Bug?

What do I win if I answer correctly? My official answer is as follows:

Time and money.

Did you know vanagon made awd models? There is a shop in P.A that does nothing but the conversion. They even have stickers they put on them that says vanaru.
