rod knock in the Brat.... ugh!

Featured Replies

well if you haven't seen my previous post about it eating coolant in the past couple days, its there. Drove the bugger to work today but was a little sluggish because its been eating coolant and burning it out the exhaust. Parked it and went into work. Came out for lunch to see if I could possibly figure out where it might be getting coolant from like the baseplate gasket on the carb or an intake gasket, went to turn it over and it goes "knock knock knock CLUNK!". So I tried it again a couple hors later and still it has this horrific knocking sound. Kinda sounds like it might be a starter which I hope it is but how could it get a rod knock from sitting in a parking lot? I know its a little low on oil cause it has a bit of an oilpan gasket leak but it made no noise on my 3 miles drive to work this morning. Also, its been around 10* the past few days if that helps any. I made sure to chekc the coolant level before I left for work this morning since it was pretty low. If anything, I got another engine I can swap into it.... I got a spare starter I can try tomorrow if anything.

could be that its something to do with it cooling down after running.

we had a landrover do something similar years ago..was tired but running ok try'd to start it cold after checking points and clackclackclack

possible hydro-locked cylinder

coolant from the intake gasket problem filled a cyl.

pull the plugs - crank for 15 seconds

reinstall plugs

Ya! just remember you cant compress a liquid, its possible to bend a rod if its hydro-locked,or just put an enormouuse strain on that little rod bearing and take it out all together. Good luck!

ok I'll get it home today and pull the plugs and see what it does. I hope its just hydrolocked and not a bad engine cause I don't feel like swapping this engine again. I did it at the beginning of January.

uh oh:eek: . well yea we've got a few spares. maybe its time to build one that'll last and wont leak all over the place. This is my brat he's talkin about.

i`d probly trade you a running gen 1 brat for your gen 2 needing a motor:brow: lol....... but seriously:brow:

i wish the gen 2 i just bought only needed a motor, its got rust/dents/interior/fuel pump issues
