Help needed on 3AT to DR swap

Hello all,

 

I have an 86 GL10 Turbo 3AT pushbutton.

 

I am getting all the DR swap parts thanks to Gary from this car:

Late model RX (not sure of year)

 

I have been reading on the swap for several weeks and gone back to just about every post I can find however different people post different things on the parts list. Can someone help me out to make sure this list is correct:

 

DR Transmission

Crossmember and long bolts

Front half of drive shaft

Clutch cable, pedal box, solenoids

Flywheel

Shifter, linkage and console

Front axles - according to Miles full time is 25 spline, AT is 23 spline

 

Not needed?:

Rear half of driveshaft

Rear end (RX is 3.7 LSD)

Cluster (my digi works ok and I don't really care about having a low light or not)

 

 

Anything else?

you will need the axles as well ,since the rx turbo 5spd is 25 splines, all turbo 5spds are 25 splines. all full tim e trannies are 25 spline including the 4spd at and the xt6 tranny

 

the 3at is 23 splines, even turbo. the difference between 3at turbo axles and norm al axles is the 3at turbo axle has a fatter doj, although 23 splines its the sam e diam eter as 25 splines and the doj cup will swap onto 25 spline axles. basically 3at turbo axle is the fattest 23 spline axles

 

you will need the 25 spline

 

the rear diff is the proper ration, but swap in the lsd if the rx has one

double check the axles - I know the front axles on the 85' MY turbo automatic were 23 spline, the MT tho are 25 spline - you can't just count the bands on the outside of the axle as there were three-band 23 and 25 spline axles

the rest looks correct

ok... one question I've always had in the back of mine when people bring up swapping axles around...

 

are axle spline counts (23/25) only different at the tranny, and not the hub? I presume it's like this, since I've never heard mention of having to change the hubs to match the axles. (I also don't have the stuff here to check myself)

And you would certainly need the rear driveshaft if you want 4wd.

Yeah, I have 4wd now. I'm not asking if I need the driveshaft for 4wd. I'm asking because I believe the AT and MT shaft lengths are different.

 

From other threads, only the front half is different. Can someone confirm?

Yes, there is a difference in lengths. Use the 5spd driveline for the swap. If you need proof, just put the 2 together when your doing the swap and compare. Just make sure you label them so you dont mix them up.

the rear half of the driveshaft is all the same lenght. only the front half is different in length depending on the tranny. the rear half contains both u joints. the front half has the carrier.

 

if you takeit off the parts car you might as well take the whole thing or leave it on the diff. keep the old one as a spare should the u joint go out

 

when they say get the crossmember, leave it on the tranny and drop it as a unit from the car. , keep the longer bolts as you will n eed the where its just a body bolt on the AT

According to GrossGary, the full time RX has a 3.7LSD rear so the trans is matched up to my stock 3AT turbo rear.

thanks to miles for this list of parts you need: (my comments in parentheses)

 

DR Transmission (out of the car, sitting in the engine bay)

Crossmember and long bolts (attached to the trans, have no idea where the bolts are, probably lying on the ground?)

Front half of drive shaft (under the car, attached to the rear half of driveshaft, bolts stubborn)

Clutch cable, pedal box, solenoids (all still in car, solenoids by drivers side strut tower if i forget to pull them)

Flywheel (still attached to motor, i'll have to remove it)

Shifter, linkage and console (attached to trans or lying on passengers seat)

Front axles - according to Miles full time is 25 spline, AT is 23 spline (bolted to hub, free from trans, unbolt from hub and they'll slide right out)

 

other items:

instrument cluster is yours if you want it, take it.

is you want the hill holder to work you'll need the brake master cylinder. let me know if you want that, i think i cut through the cable for that, but can send you one off my XT6.

Is the hill holder useful? Seemed other people have said it was too finicky to rely on.

 

What size is the axle nut. The socket for my other cars is a 21/22mm? I think its 32mm for subaru.?

the hill holder is a matter of personal pereference - but you do need some sort of return spring if you aren't using it

 

I think 32 mm is right for the axle nut

I have also done this complete swap in my '89 RX but I went from an 4EAT auto to a RX tranny. Like it was said before, use the whole driveshaft, not just the front half of it. It will make your life so much easier. I got mine from a parts wagon that was a NA d/r 5-speed. Bolted right in.
