March 9, 200620 yr I ahve a 3 speed auto in my 87 Gl-10 Turbo, the car has 111,000 miles and the tranny shifts when you do it manually but when in Drive the tranny takes about two seconds to get in gear and shifts sluggishly. Servoed it and its beter but I was told the input shaft can be worn, from what I read does the tranny have to be out or can I do it in the car. I was told its on the passenger side and has three bolts, well I found a three bolt item that sticks out about half an inch and is circular. Also do I have to be carefull when takeingit out if its easy. Thanks
March 9, 200620 yr Replacing the governor is easy, take off the cover and slide it out. If the drive gear is worn, try to look in at the input shaft. If the input shaft is also worn, replacing the governor will only be a temporary fix. Replacing the input shaft is major, and it is much cheaper to just find a good used tranny. As your problem is quite common with high mile autos, check the replacement tranny before you even buy it.
