i recently broke my exhaust piping where the resonator and cat converter connects...we threw a weld in just to hold them together for now...but im gonna be visiting the junkyard soon...what are my options? im going to need the cat converter and the resonator that whole housing is rotted away

 

 

what kind cars should i be looking for...and what do u think about cutting the pipe before the cat and after the resonator then just throwing in a flex pipe from napa?

it is illegal to sell a used cat converter. The JY isn't going to sell you one (unless you know the owner or is a buddy of yours etc.)

 

A long time ago I had a broken Y pipe that contains the cat converter in it. I bought a used "muffler" from the nice fellow.

well i dont know him that well...and me just turning 18 doesnt help either but i could guarantee it that some of the older folks around here know him plenty well.....im going to joes junkyard in new ringold near cabela's

what do u suggest i do if i cant get a used cat...go buy a stock one for 100 dollars or spend the money and upgrade my exhaust?

see what you can do at the JY. If you can get it there then look into upgrading the exhaust and if that doesn't fly the get in touch with me...there is a guy here in Lancaster Co that did a full exhaust on my 83 subaru for dirt cheap.

 

Akron is in Lancaster Co and is just off of rt 222 about 10 miles NE of lancaster. From New Ringold you could be at my house in 50 min or less.

yea im familiar with lancaster....how about the flex pipe? it'll only cost like 20 bones....chop off the cat and the resonator...then install the flex pipe

i think the oxygen sensor might be on the second cat...how many problems would i be facing with that route?

 

 

would it just give me a check engine light all the time....or can it stop me frmo starting my car?

 

on a side note i took my car to advanced auto to do the whoel check engine light thing...and there plug wouldnt match mine....any other places that would be able to do it for free

I think any JY will sell you any part you need from the exhaust EXCEPT the cat. Flex pipes etc. shouldn't be a prob.

 

What car do you have that they couldn't hook up to it? If it is 95 and older than yes they can't because they are trying to use and OBD2 machine on an OBD1 car. They should be smarter than that.

flex pipes suck. i've seen some that are stainless steel and might be better but the ones at the local stores i've seen and used rust out in less than a year. maybe if you verify that it's stainless or something, paint it or coat it to prevent it from rusting away. otherwise how long they last is not worth the time or money spent fixing it. i'd rather ride around with an open exhaust until i can fix it right. (like i'm doing with subeman's old XT Turbo right now).

 

advanced carries bolt on exhaust parts. price them out, XT mid-pipes with the converter and flanges all on them are only $90.

 

what i do is take the old pipe to a shop, have them bend the tube like stock then weld on flanges as needed.

 

post in the parts wanted forum, might be able to find one for sale. i have a 1997 OBS that i'm not going to need the mid and rear exhaust parts for. 2.2 motor, exhaust should bolt up to yours. PM me quick though if you want it soon, i won't have internet access all weekend.

no the flex pipe is legit my buddy has one on his truck...i was just worried about cutting off a cat and resonator...the o2 sensor in on the cat...is there any way of grounding it or something so it thinks its woprking....and what can occur when the o2 sensor is non functional?

from NAPA? the ones i've bought before suck hardcore. i'd imagine a good stainless variety that doesn't rust should work. the ridges arent' good for flow, but we're not talking high performance here and is a great way to do it yourself. how long has he had it on his truck? lots of miles/use on it?

 

so...this has 2 O2 sensors and you're worried about removing one of them? can you reinstall the sensor somewhere else? O2 bungs are 2 dollars at the shop, maybe you can just install one in your new exhaust setup. guy gave me one free when i stopped in the muffler shop and asked for an O2 plug. or as a last resort, let them install it for you in the pipe you're going to use.

no high performance is not needed here...i was just reading the other exhaust thread and that whole backpressure low end torque...i def dont want to have to go up hills in 3rd

he has alot of miles on his flex pipe...and i cant imagine a day when its not submerged in mud..but yes he does have a stainless steel one
