April 1, 200620 yr Here's the situation for which I'd like your imput... '93 impreza sitting for over a year, maybe more like 2. I'm going to flat-tow it tomorrow, but don't think its a good Idea to just try to jump it and go. I think draining the gas, or at least supplimenting it with new fresh would be prudent. i can see draining oil and power flushing tranny fluid and coolant as suggested steps to take before trying to crank it. The mechanic familiar with this particular car suggests just adding new gas to the tank and jumping it... I'd like to get some beta and oppinions from the croud here too. any other suggestions, ideas, thoughts on steps to take before trying to fire it up? Its got a couple other stories but I'm okay with where those are at now... Thanks!
April 1, 200619 yr My biggest fear would be a frozen engine. See if you can turn the engine over by hand. The biggest issue with an engine that sits are dried out seals (and valve stem seals), stuck valves, frozen pistons and stuck rings. I would only change the oil, put in new plugs, drain and refresh the gas, then see if it starts. If it starts and runs well, then you can change all the fluids. Dont forget the brak fluid.Inspect the tires as they prbbly have falt spots or dry rot. Inspect all rubber parts. nipper
April 1, 200619 yr Sounds like it is an auto tranny, so flat towing may not be a problem, if it is AWD then the center diff would be an open diff so binding shouldn't be a problem. I've had engines that sat for over two years that had not leaks, and have had engines that sat for less then a year that leaked all over. Alot depends on the state of the seals at the time the engine was stopped for storage. If you have the abliltiy, it is always a good precaution to re-seal an engine that has set for awhile. Having good gas in the system will help getting it started. I don't think flushing the tranny with have any effect on starting the engine, but may be needed to drive the car.
