Hey everyone I have a 2000 OB 5 speed. 77K I love my car BUT when it is in reverse and the car is in motion, Does not matter if i have the clutch in or not there is a GRINDING noise coming from the tranny!!

Could this be a bad gear? or low on fluid? Also how do i check the fluid? I can not seem to locate the container for the fluid.

I am not that much of a mechanic so I may have the termology wrong. Also please excuse my TypeOs

Tech Manual tranny noise troubleshooting section:

[K100] 3-1 DIAGNOSTICS

1. Manual Transmission

3. Unusual noise comes from transmission.

NOTE:

If an unusual noise is heard when the

vehicle is parked with its engine idling

and if the noise ceases when the clutch

is disengaged, it may be considered that

the noise comes from the transmission.

(a) Insufficient or improper lubrication.

Lubricate or replace with specified oil.

(B) Worn or damaged gears and bearings

NOTE:

If the trouble is only wear of the tooth

surfaces, merely a high roaring noise will

occur at high speeds, but if any part is

broken, rhythmical knocking sound will

be heard even at low speeds.

Replace.

Check the fluid level!

Yeah emmmmmm, my tranny is shot!!!! Reverse is gone, I have gotten quotes from 3000 to 5000 for a new one! and there are NONE in the US. National back order from Japan.

Good news I took out an insurance program on my car when I bought it. My new transmition will only cost me 50 bucks!!:headbang:

If it's just a whine, that's normal straight cut gear tooth whine (Why car transmissions use helical gear teeth, aside from reverse which has to be straight cut since it is a sliding gear), but if it makes horrid grinding noises, that's bad... :-P

Make sure it has the correct type of gear oil in it. My first car (a '84 Accord hatchback) had AT fluid in its 5-speed (the spec. in that case was regular engine oil) and it was grinding in reverse because of that.
