EA71 rebuild or replacment questions

Featured Replies

The EA71 in my 78 Brat is just about at the end of its life. I was wondering if it is still possible to get enough parts to rebuild an EA71, and also what other subaru engines can be stuffed in there, with limited modification. Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you would like a little more power,a pretty popular swap is to put a ea81 in its place.Pretty much a direct drop in.But yes you can still get parts for the ea71 if you would rather stick with that engine.

keep the ea71 or find a ea71t, may want to convert to electronic distributor, and xt6 alt and a weber while you're at it

the 4 extra hp you get from going to the ea81 is not worthwile

The main reason I need to do something about my EA71 is that it leaks about a 1/4 of a quart of oil a day and leaves a trail behind it. Also it has started runing worse than usual... No pep till just about redline, stalling, missing... and it has a wicked backfire wich has gotten worse since it started leaking oil. So at the very least, I have to pull the engine and replace whatever gaskets are blown and I suspect I will find some other fun chores when I get that far in.

It would be my guess that your rear main seal is leaking causing the oil loss. That would also cause you to loose power because of that.I think it may just need to be resealed along with the oil pump.

Well, being rated at 65hp, the EA71 wasn't meant to be a powerhouse to begin with

But yeah, I think you just need a resealing job and general tune-up. I don't think the engine is done for.

Thought I would give you guys the update...

I checked under the car and it was leaking out of the oil preassure sensor only. I pulled the skid plate off to make sure, and yup thats it. I went to pick up a replacement yesterday and they had to order it. It came in today, but on the way to pick up the part the one thats on there gave up on me so I had to do the old dump a quart of oil in at the stop light trick. Im going to go put the new sensor in.... I sure hope the car starts:-\

I got the new sensor installed, added 2.25 quarts of oil and it started right up... and no more oil leaks!

now go stick a weber carb with manual choke and ford air box on it

easy rebuild!

and if you want to be really nice to it, stick on a frantz

What the heck is a frantz? Maybe I am dumb and just don't know.
