June 5, 200619 yr So this just strated today. I noticed this morning I had a very hard time pushing the handle button in, therfore not releasing the ebrake. It finally went in and I released the ebrake. Now tonight when I get home I had to pull the ebrake up (no clicks) and it wouldn't lock. So I let it down and pulled again (with clicks) and it locked. I did this a few times to rule out a fluke. So in shorter easier terms, I have to pull the ebrake up 2x for it to lock. Whats the deal?
June 5, 200619 yr Sounds like the ratchet is corroded. You live in the land of snow and road salt, right?? If you can get under the car easily, I think you can hit it with a shot of WD40 or PB Blast from there -- I don't remember absolutely that you can see it without disassembling something, but I seem to recall that you may be able to get to it.
June 5, 200619 yr Author Yea car has been NY-Mass-NH-NY, so its had its share of salt. Hopefully it wont be raining tom. so I can check it out. I was thinking it might be in the car, like the little clicker wheel (if it has one) is off track or something.
June 5, 200619 yr Well, the thing that you call the clicker wheel is what I'm referring to as the ratchet. I can't honestly remember if it is inside the car (you'll have to pull off the console cover to get to it then) or if it is accessible under the car. But if it is dry enough to crawl under tomorrow, then by all means, have a look!

Its inside the car, in the handle. its a simple cam and the cam may have overtravled and rotated (common when in need of adjustment). The second applictaion reset it. You do know your ebrake should only go up 5 notches, more then that its out of adjustment. nipper
June 5, 200619 yr might need a cleaning/greasing too. i've seen tons of junk get wadded up under the center console and the gear...the older it is, the more likely obviously.
June 5, 200619 yr Author It goes up maybe 5-7 notches. Thanks, I'm headed out there shortly to see whats up.
June 5, 200619 yr Author Well after some investigating, and adjusting, I figured out what the problem is. The dis-engage button will not fully pop out which means that the arm will not touch the "clicker wheel" therefore not locking. I have to pull the button out for the ebrake to work. Do I need a new ebrake handle?? It seems that there would be a spring in it but I couldn't find it.
June 6, 200619 yr Author throw this up ttt. Going out to change my fuel filter, I love subaru for making it so accessable.
