My 88 efi 4wd wagon is my first soob, it was also a "free" soob. A broken timing belt and an owner with a new car and house repairs to do brought me and the soob together. I finally finished the timing belt replacement this after noon. New idler, tensioners, front crank seal, oil pump seals, water pump timing belts, plugs, and radiator. Guess what. The new water pump places the water pump pulley a quater of an inch out of line with the rest of the damn pulleys!!!!!!!

Shame on me for not checking... I guess. The bolt patern is the same (duh). the impeller and volute look identical as well as the pulley flanges and the exterior of the pump its self. What the hell?? My wagon has the spfi and is and ea82 powered car that was originally equiped with AC. So.. what car does the water pump that I installed belong on?? The water pump pulley is closer to the engine than it should be. All pulleys on my engine are double shived.

 

Almost there!!!!!! needs a new rear muffler and probally an o2 sensor. ANd a cv boot. Hope this thing runs after all the work, could probally buy another soob for what I have into it for parts !!

There are two different water pumps. I know this because i just replaced my own, on MY free subbie, that I got for putting a timing belt on it :- ) The two water pumps are identical, except for the "deck height" which means your pulley wont align. you got the tall one, you need the short one. i forget what the numbers are.. i think one was 100 and one 110 mm or something like that.... but that was virtually the only difference. about half the stores i called just quoted me a price, and half asked me which pump i needed, even though i told them, i dunno, auto, blah blah blah, you cant tell ME which one i need? I actually signed up here to find my answer, and did so.. but it still took a somewhat informed and somewhat lucky guess. call all the parts stores in your area, just as an experiemnt. dont tell them about the difference, and find out which ones tell you. then you know the good parts stores. :- )

Thank you, I'll call the parts sroe on monday and get this straightened out. The place I use is GOOD, just a minor over site. The guy behind the counter and myself agreed that it was the right one, pays to slown down a bit I guess. Never thought to look at the deck height... But now I now and so will the parts guy.

I just buy the short ones (105mm) and just add washers under the pulley if it turns out I need a long one.

You can use a gear puller to pull the flange along the shaft apparently.

Get somebody to confirm this before you do it
