What color?

If it is 17k beyond having the timing belt replaced, and no history of head gasket failure, I'd have to say "NO DEAL HOWIE!"

For that kind of coin, I'd just about sell you my 97 with 98k miles that has already had all the head gaskets/water pump/timing belt/new clutch/ad nauseum replaced for you!

Use the head gasket issue against them. Try and get it for half of what they are asking, and put the rest of the money away for repairs and etc.

hey, you and nipper should really stop stealing eachothers avatars.

yeah, i'd say that price is a bit high. unless it's absolutely MINT and all the above was replaced.

i'd go around 4k or so.

Around here $5K would be a fair deal. I see them for a lot more "asking price" in the Seattle area.

I have a 97 outback & I really like it. Look for evidence of engine oil leaks, the only trouble I've had with it. Also check for crud in the radiator overflow tank for the head gasket problem. It should be clean green. 105 for the timing belt, should be in the maintenance record you wrote of.

My advice is look it over and if you like it have it checked out by your local subaru specialist shop. All OK? Go for it!

yeah...its kinda freaky how similar they are.

nipper needs to go back to his old one. i barely recognize him. it's kinda funny.. you get to know people on here by what their avatar is and when they change it it's like they got a haircut and gained/lost 50 pounds. at first you don't recognize them and then you get used to it eventually and it becomes who they are.

To the people who feel you can ask for a lower price on a car because of a possible head gasket failure.......Get over it!!!!!! It may be a problem, it may not be. But you can't assume that it will fail, and therefore ask for a deduction in price, this makes no sense. Good I got that off my chest. Anyways, If the timing belt has been changed, along with any leaking seals, along with fresh fluids all the way around............it may check out and be a good deal. It is on the high end of the price range on this year car!!!
