July 26, 200619 yr What is the filter that is clamped next to the battery (between the engine and battery)? It looks like it comes out of the trans cooler and is bolted to the frame . I know about the inline one that was a mod. I see that one. Is the replacement a fuel filter sure looks like one? Some kinda retro fit? Thanks 1992 Legacy L Auto
July 26, 200619 yr Depends which filter you're looking at. If you're talking about the one on the top of the strut, it's the fuel filter. If you're looking at the ground, I believe it's a transmission fluid filter.

Thanks 1992 Legacy L Auto Between the battery and the engine (right next to the radiator) would be the transmission fluid filter. The fuel filter has thick hoses going from it to the engine itself.
July 26, 200619 yr Author Ok I see now what it is. It's the trans filter. I think this was the recall Subaru did . I found some info on an old post. Part#31099AA091 Thanks! Jim
