88 Justy crank weld and re-grind

Featured Replies

Houdy folks!

Daughter's oil pump failed on her 88 Justy and ate the #1 rod journal and scored the rest. I cannot find anyone locally (Kansas) who wants to weld and grind the crank. Damage is outside of normal undersize bearings and the local parts house wants 250.00 for a rebuilt crank. Does anyone know of a reputable shop that specializes in these 3 throw cranks? Is there something scary about weld and grind on these that none of my crank grinders want to touch it? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

You might want to check that you definitely cant get further undersized bearings.....When rebuilding my ea81 i found my CS was outside limits for subaru's recomended undersizing.....

I had decided to find another crankshaft to use, however when i talked to the local soob rebuilder who was doing a bit of machining for me he said it was not unusual to go beyond that limit, and bearings were readily available....

I ended up getting a 0.5mm undersize, apparantly with the ea81s bearings are available for up to -1.0mm!!

Something to look into anyway, much cheaper (and more reliable) than welding if possible.

Thanks Ross! Just an FYI, I received an email response from http://www.ccrengines.com that jeffast123 had suggested:

"JB,

Thank you for your inquiry. I'm sorry, but we do not rebuild Justy engines.

Thanks kingbobdole, but most of the junkyard Justys around here suffer from the dreaded oil pump shaft failure and are locked up or have already given their engines away to someone...will press on however, the chase is part of the challenge of the rebuild! Anyone had good luck with a Justy oriented parts house? jb

Have any of the machinists told you WHY they won't weld the crank? Wrong material, no fixture that handles 3-cyl, other? If no fixture/experience for 3-cyl, maybe check out a Suzuki forum and see what they say.

NorthWet: No, they just tell me that they do not want to do the job. Could be not worth the set-up with 3 throws and 4 mains, lack of experience with this model or they are just plain busy. Called grinder/welders in Wichita and KC area, all with the same story. Might try to find a link on 1mm undersize rod brgs and have a go with the mains at .25mm under (which will clean-up OK and I have a set of the .25mm crank bearings so the rods are all I need.) There is a generous undercut radius on either side of the rod bearing area and maybe this is the spooky thing for these crank rebuilders when the undersize drops below .25mm...but I doubt it...Most grinders I have met over the years can dress a stone to handle this and .039" (1mm) under should not be a deal breaker with 4 mains to support the small journal diameters.

Puzzled in Kansas...... need more information! jb

Still suggest that you talk with the masters of the 3-cylinder, the fine Suzuki folks. Samurai and Sprint came with 3-cyl, and the Samurai has a HUGE following.
