I'm considering running the WRX downpipe now I know I need to weld on an 02 bung but besides that what other modifications do I need to do ? I heard something about there being a rubbing issue ? what do I need to grind down/remove to solve that.

Removing the heat sheilds and the cat would, I imagine, help the rubbing issue. Might have to pound on the firewall though.

I got an aftermarket Megan Racing 3" bellmouth and had NO rubbing issues. So I think carfreak is right, cat and heat shields are what rubs, not the piping itself.

A friend of a friend just got me a HKS wrx DP for $120 I couldn't be happier

I used a stock WRX DP when I first put it together.

 

The heatshielding does rub, but the pipe did as well.. even without the shielding on there. I had to heat the bottom bend and bend it down just a hair so it would clear the Xmember

HOLY COW!!!! That is flippin' awesome!!! I imagine that thing runs like a scalded cat! Is that a WRX FMIC piping kit? Do you have any pics of your FMIC? I just love seeing Subarus with a nice set of braces!!!
