80 4x4 woes

Featured Replies

1980 4x4 ea-71(jdm) single range. put in a "new" tranny and (brand) new plugs, wires, starter, blah, blah. anyway the car will turn over good without the sparkplugs, but once they're in it's like there is way too much compression for it to spin over. i'd hate to have pull the tranny again, but i'm thinkin i might have to. when we first got everything installed after the tranny swap, she fired right up, idled for a little while, then when i went to give a little gas and she died, hasn't wanted to turn over with plugs in since.

any thoughts/ideas/and such is very greatly appriciated

thanks in advance

does it turn over really fast with the plugs in or does it struggle?

Hmm. why do you suspect a tranny problem? It seems that if it turns over fine without the plugs, the tranny can't be binding up. Is the starter okay, or maybe it needs replacing (again) - -maybe it's not on there straight and is binding? Or the battery? What voltage are you getting at the starter when you are cranking? Can you turn it over by hand with the plugs in there? (with a breaker bar on the front crank).

Sounds like a dead starter motor to me.. But could also be a loose wire on the start, or on the battery. Check all connections. Then try another starter.

Also could be the timing is set way too far forward, and the starter is working against the spark to get the engine moving.

tanks guys.

getting good voltage evrywhere ive checked(battery, switch, starter, coil, alt.) tried putting in the plugs one at a time, and once i got all 4 in it didnt do what it usuaally does, turns over kinda slow, but still dosnt fire(altho it tried), hadnt thought to check the timing situation, i'll try that after work.

the wonders about pulling the trans was from when it was put in, the drive shaft was stuck(neutral) but i got that fixed

thanks again for the help
