turbo

Featured Replies

this may seem like a really dumb ?, but is it possible to pull off a turbo from a turbo model of the ea81 to stick on my 86 brat?

Im pretty sure you could do it if you stole all the turbo bits off the donor motor, but you may be better off swapping in the whole motor. Or save your coins and whap an EJ into your brat. Also isnt the carb motor higher compression than the turbo? Might just be EA82's that are like that....

All carb engines have higher comp than turbo's.

Its not just a simple remove from one and install in the another. The EA81T is unique because the injectors are in the heads. You will need the wiring harness, ECU, fuel pump, fuel sending unit, engine x-member and maybe more peices I missed. And this is if you have the complete engine to do the swap.

The EA81T is not the same as any other EA81. The EA81T is MPFI, whereas EVERY other EA81 is carburated. MPFI motors have injectors in the heads... Carburated motors have... well, no injectors.

In order to turbocharge your EA81, you will need heads from a EA81T, a turbocharger, the injectors, the wiring, the ECU. Not to mention, probably upgraded fuel lines to handle the pressure and an upgraded fuel pump.

It could be done, they did offer EA81T Brats, just might be easier to do a complete engine swap and you will definatly need a donor vehicle.

I have done a n/a > turbo swap on a Brat and it's not as easy as it sounds, you will need the whole motor if you want it to hang together, the cam is different, pistons, heads, and just about everything else that hangs on the outside, you will also need an ECU, wiring loom, upgraded fuel system, x-member and exhaust, that should get it down the road.

lf you want to keep it on the road you might also consider upgrading the suspension as that also was different and discs on the back are the only way to go.

Hope this answers your question.
