beataru
So i bought the Blueroo from rallyruss... it works fine.... and then im at a stoplight waiting for the turnsignal and it turns green.... i put it in gear and let out the clutch and.. HEY! im not going anyware... didnt feel it.. didnt see it... didnt smell it(is that possible???) it just died, not because i poped the clutch or anything... i didnt even notice it was dead, untill after i wasnt moving an 5 Arizonan drivers(who yes i am one of them.. are edgy) stare me down as im freaking-out because its my first time with a stalled car in an intersection... bare in mind i am 16! """Im taking automotive training at EVIT... so feel free to use the terms and crap that you normally would.. ill figure it out if i dont know! my bro-in-law is a mechanic---also he owns a GL and a rs!....hes the subienerd! and the one who helping me deal with this!"""" back to the horror story.... ... try to start it.. wont start... cranks... i get fuel... i dont get spark... check the coil... not getting power... put in another one.. still not getting power...put oldone back in... check distributor.. not spining.. check disty drivegear.. not spinning... pull off drivers side timing cover, belt not broken! crank the engine.... belt doesnt move... im guessing its the tensioner.... didnt try the screwdriver method to see if it would turn if i put tension on it... order new tensioners and belts just because im in there.... still havnt worked on it yet.. going to this weekend... i was just wondering.... i havnt taken off the covers yet or even gotten in there yet... just wondering what your guys are thinkin... before i get in there... Whats wrong... did my crank break or the timing gears strip off of the crank???? It sounds fine when i crank it.... just wont start.. I NEED YOUR IMPUT SUBIE NATION!!! SAVE MY SUBIEEEEEEE (hehe good movie line... or not!)
GeneralDisorder
How do you know it's not broken if you haven't removed the covers? Is there any slop in the belt? GD

daeron
the crankshaft timing belt pulley is held in place on the shaft by a Woodruff Key. Its a small metal tooth that slide into a groove on the crankshaft nose, and a corresponding groove on the timing belt sprocket. your problems may well be there. i know the key itself is like 3 dollars at a dealer, and they had it in stock when i went for it. incidentally, i didnt need it. but you may need the key, or the sprocket, or quite likely both. I had this issue once on a geo with an isuzu motor in it (geo storm) and I was told to replace the bolt holding it in, too. that bolt was like 23 bucks or something, not cheap.. but i had a great amount of difficulty getting it off, and THAT may have been the reason everyone told me to replace it as well. this was about six years ago, and i have learned so much more about mechanicking since then, that i just dont recall.. but if you crank the engine, and the timing belt is DEFINITELY intact (read: do not buy parts without seeing the front of the engine) then your problem is most likely going to be with that key or the sprocket, not the crankshaft itself (although its possible) its engineered like that so that it can go bad without destroying the crankshaft and necessitating MUCH more work :- ) good luck, it shouldnt be that big a deal. replacing oil seals while youve got pulleys off is an excellent idea too. beataru
okay that makes sense... but is it normal for something like that to break all of a sudden.. like in my case... on idle???

Turbone
Sounds like maybe you should check that water pump too. Or you might end up with the same situation again. Oops, a min late.
beataru
Or you might end up with the same situation again. exactly... plus these timing belts were Goodyear pieces of!@#$%^&*(()+... so i got factory belts from Japan.... they smell like good quality.... compared to aftermarket..... so i buy factory parts when its something as important as timing!!! Re-man is nice because of there guarentee and all but.... if it does break then... i have to take everything back off again and take it in to get another piece of crap.... i hate doing things twice in a row!!!
