rx with 6 speed?

Featured Replies

well i just took a drive in my friend wrx that a 6 speed sti was put in, and man does it pull hard. its a jdm 6 speed which has a much better 5th and 6th gear. so anyways i was wondering if i could put 1 in my 88 rx turbo? would i have to change the rear end as well? then all the brakes and wheels? i just wondering cause it sounds like a good mod for it. :headbang:

You'd have to get and adapter plate, and change the rear end, as i don't think there 3.9 ratio, but at that point, if you're gonna put in a 6 speed, the stock RX motor is a bit, umm, inadequate. so while your at it, EJ25T swap would make it :slobber:

Then, giving the fact that your RX is lite as can be, you'll have yourself a WRX killer any day. Maybe even a few civics if your lucky.

i have been looking into the same thing. but i am to the point that i need to take some dimensions. i dont know if the trans tunel in the RX would be large enough for the 6sp. it is much larger than the 5sp.

also you would not be able to use an adapter from an EA motor to an EJtype trans. you would have to get rid of a 1/2 inch. whereas when you do an EJ engine and an EA trans you have to add a 1/2 inch

makes sence. ya the 6 speed is much bigger and 100+lbs heavier then the rx's tranny. i was just so impressed with the difference with the upgrade in the wrx. id like to see what u come up with if anything.

I believe the largest transmission subaru put into their cars is actually the 4eat (or 5eat now I gues) which fits very well in our cars..interesting thing is that the front diff section of a six speed sti box looks very much like that found on an ejxx 4eat..Another coincidence that the 4eat drive shaft from the impreza is the same length as the six speed drive shaft..but yes getting back on topic.. I do think if our cars can hold a 4eat they should certainly be able to hold an sti 6 speed..providing it is already ejxxx swapped that is and you don't mind fabbing up some mounts and linkages..

you make some good points. now all i have to do is catch up form my latest mod. and start looking for a JDM 6sp for my wagon.

if no one else is willing to try it. my wagon may have to be the test rat.
