2000 OBW sounds like a diesel

Featured Replies

Hi folks.

Often in the morning, if I let my wagon idle, there is a scraping, rubbing metal sound in time with RPMs.

It makes my petrol car sound like a diesel.

If I step on the gas, and step up the RPMs, the grinding goes away, and all sounds normal. After arriving at work (a 20min drive) i can idle, and there is no grinding. Some mornings, it's not there. Others it is. I can't tell it it's temperature related or not.

I added some Rislone to the oil (as per my mechanic friends suggestion) and it didn't seem to help.

Anything sound familiar about this?

It's a 2000 OBW, 150K miles. Timing belts and water pump changed a little after 110K

Thanks

Bryan

It sounds like possibly a timing belt tensioner .

Idle Pulley Tensioner? I've read here in past posts that these can often make noises, especially when cold, similar to "piston slap".

Just a guess.

Sorry.. someone's gotta' say it...

Did you put diesel in it? :D

but serioiusly, i'd check the timeing belt tensioner.

=) someone said I'd get better mileage?

(kidding)

How do I check the tensioner? and .. uh.. where is it? I'm new to this whole internal combusting engine thingy.

Just go to the ford dealer and buy a couple Powerstroke decals and stick them on your Sooobaru.... That should solve the problem.

Thanks for the quick replies.

If this is a belt tensioner, should i get it fixed ASAP, or can i combine it with other work in the next couple of months.

Will it do more damage to other things if not fixed soon?

If the tensioner fails it is often a fatal blow to an engine like yours. Sooner would be good.

my car did the same noise...and it turned out to be an idler gear...blew up 2 weeks later.....

my g/f's impreza does that noise and its been going for a month or two with no problems yet
