Which models used the EA82T engine?

Recommended Posts

A quick intro first.

I'm fairly new to the board, but I've had my '94 Loyale 4WD as a daily driver for three years now and it's still getting me from point A to point B reliably even after 195K miles. Just like the USPS motto, neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays this Subaru from reaching its destination. I can't tell you how glad I am that I found this board as the info I've found here is priceless.

Now on to the question. :burnout:

Which models of older Subarus used the EA82T engine? Don't get me wrong, I love my Loyale to death, but I sure wouldn't argue with having that little extra get-up-and-go every once in a while that a turbo engine can deliver. I've been into DSMs (Talon, Eclipse, Laser & Galant VR-4) for years and years and am in so far I don't think I'll ever be able get out. I've currently got a '92 Talon TSi AWD that's fairly built up so mass airflow sensor-equipped turbo engines are my bread and butter. I realize the EA82T will have a tough time cranking out the numbers that can be generated with a 4G63T, but I'd love to tinker around with an older fuel injected turbo Subie. Any recommendations?

Thanks a ton for the info, guys. I look forward to broadening my Subie knowledge!

you'll loose reliability if that matters at all.

slap a turbo and intercooler on the car you have rather than trying to retrofit everything. keep the temps down and run low boost (due to the high compression non-turbo block).

if you really want the turbo block, i'm not sure on models. All XT Turbo's, RX (only available with turbo) are EA82T engines. The GL-10 Turbo's are EA82T as well. loyale's...if they ever had turbo's would be an EA82T.

justy won't work, that's a freak of an engine in the subaru world. 3 cylinder as well, completely incompatible with the EA series.

If you are prepared to do something like this, just get a turbo legacy engine. It's not any more work, but it's a heck of a lot more reliable, and powerful.

EA82T's tend to blow head gaskets, and crack heads. And they only have about 25 HP more (peak) than the SPFI. The EJ22G (turbo) is 160 stock. EA82 SPFI is 90, and EA82T is 115. The almost complete lack of aftermarket support for the EA82T is a problem. Weak factory parts have no upgrade path....

Unless you have friends in the machineing business... or unlimited money...

You would need someone with very sophisticated machineing and casting abilities, and people like that have very $$$ time. The machines used to do things like createing new heads are extremely expensive, and expensive to operate. Not likely.

And if you had unlimited money - what are you doing with an EA82 in the first place? That's just stupid, and stupid people are generally poor.

BTW - for anyone reading this that HAS unlimited money and an EA82.... I am also a Pet Psychic, and I have a degree in Feng Shui. Feel free to contact me for a consultation!

its not as indepth as you may think... and you dont need to cast anything if you have unlimited money... and you would forge it! my friend has several cnc multilathes and several other thinggys like wirelathes and other things that make my eyes googly when i look at it! But anyways if you have the specs, which would take less than a day to sync exacly, then its extreemly simple... push, plug, play, bolt, and run,......... vwala...... you have new parts...... but i would have to furnish the money for the metal... thats ok, and i would have to micrometer it there too... thats ok too... i love using that thing... ahh the world of cnc's i love those things....

Lots of stupid people have money... take any of the nascar racers for example.... and you can make any engine scream... but the real question is.. if you had unlimited money why would you buy any car or engine.???? make one yourself!

Thanks for the info on the EA82T, guys. For reliability and daily driving I just may keep my eye out for an EJ22T-equipped vehicle. I know they're a bit rarer, but I've got patience.

On the subject of EA82s, I dove into the engine last night and replaced the oil pump seals, removed, cleaned and pumped up the lash adjusters with fresh oil and replaced both timing belts. For the first time in two years, the car is tick free! And yes, the "Mickey Mouse" gasket was blown out. Where I used to be able to determine RPMs by ticking speed, I now have to check the tach constantly to make sure the car is still running! I love the quiet!
