I want to sell my '87 GL wagon in CA but can't get the CEL off

Featured Replies

Is there anyway I can sell this legally? It has many issues, some of which are major but it runs and I believe someone would love it as a parts car for $200. The only reason it won't pass smog is the CEL (emissions are OK) but in test mode it won't display a legit error code no matter what I try. If I could sell it legally for $100 I'd do it. But I can't register it PNO as I don't have off street parking.

Can anyone tell me what to do?

you can sell it for "parts use only" as far as I know.

so the light is on but you cannot pull a code? that makes no sense. but hey you have looked at it not me. its probably somthing simple like the egr sol.

If the CEL is on, then a code will output to the 02 monitor LED.

Warm up engine.

Turn off ignition.

Connect test (green) connectors.

Turn on ignition (do not start it. CEL should be ON).

Depress accelerator to the floor, release to half-throttle and hold for 2 seconds.

Start engine.

Drive at greater than 5 MPH for at least 1 minute.

Stop and rev engine above 1500 rpm.

Check for codes. If the CEL is blinking there are stored codes, and you need to go to read mode.
