Ok, so I just bought a 1990 Subaru Legacy AWD. The car runs great, and i got it for a song ($900).

 

It has a couple of issues I am trying to track down.

 

First and foremost, The tach does not work- it just sits at 0. So, in the interests of tracking this down...

 

Where does the tach signal come from? The engine or the ECU?

 

Is this a common thing? If so, what's the usual culprit?

well, it used a speed cable for the tach, not a sensor, so check to see if its connected, also i heard there is a piece that often fails,but i cant remember what the peice was, someone odd to know.

Check the fuse box for a blown fuse. The tach's power

is fused.

I strongly doubt it is using a cable for the tach. Certainly you are thinking of the speedometer?

OOHH!! lol, sorry, didnt realize the tach wasnt a speed odometer, well ya check out the fuse, and check engine light?

The tach signal either comes from the ecu or the ignitor, i don't remeber which.
