November 21, 200619 yr Hi All i did a head gasket job on my 1996 Outback, everything is ok except when you start the engine its very noisy like a diesel engine, i don't know if there is a solution for that or a treatment to add with the oil to clean all the thin lines inside the engine. thank you and have a nice day
November 21, 200619 yr Have you checked the clearance on the valve adjusters? Are they manual or hydaulic? If they are ok, I have found the "Mobil Delvac 1" 5W-40 engine oil is the best to quell my piston slap on cold mornings.
November 21, 200619 yr Author Hi there first thanks for replying actualy its not a piston slap, the noise is in the heads, after the engine warmup the engine sounds normal.the noise started after i did the head gasket.the guy who did the head gasket told me, it will take some time to clear the thin lines in the heads, then the noise will disappear.i don't feel its going to disappear coz i drove almost 1000 miles after the job was done.
November 21, 200619 yr Author i'll try to use the "Mobil Delvac 1" 5W-40 engine oil " hoping that the noise will disappear. thank you.
November 21, 200619 yr Sounds like something didn't get adjusted correctly when put back together.Check and see if your able to adjust your valve lash. John
November 21, 200619 yr Well, well, a fellow Flatheadian ... welcome to the board John. Smitty from Whitefish (but I work in Kalispell). Wave at the green 2000 Legacy 'HONU' or the black Tracker/Sidekick '"pick-up" 'IIAWAH'.
November 21, 200619 yr when i did the headgaskets on my 96 obw the liffters where noisy for the first day, also if the motor is the 2.5 it has hydraulic liffters. The liffters should have pumped up by now with 1000 miles on them.I took the liffters apart while i had them out since alot of them where stuck and cleaned them up to make sure they would pump up,and let them sit in oil.
November 22, 200619 yr Not gonna hoard this thread but wanted to say hi real quick to Smitty,we've discussed area conditions before regarding what they use up here for ice melt. Stop by the Kum and go c-store (cenex) on 93 south sometime and introduce yourself, buy you a cup of Joe or cappacino or pop, good to get to know you. John
November 25, 200619 yr if the noise goes away in 30 sec. or so my guess is (cam belt tentioner).had 2 like that.
November 25, 200619 yr Author Hi Thanks for the good information is it possible to take them apart after putting all together? is it a hard job to do alone and how much time it will take? its a 2.5 engine as you mentioned .
