88 turbo a/t problem

Recommended Posts

it's my 88 turbo a/t full time 4wd wagon , changed the plugs [ ngk] proper gap, good wires, new cap ,rotor, higher octine fuel, newer fuel filter 5,000mi ago, new air filter, here is the problem , car starts fine , idle seems up and down now, this is from a cold start, when you drive it it real slugish for a few miles , then kicks in and runs fine , a few times black smoke came out the exhaust  , the cat has been removed , comments ?? thanks

coolant temperature sensor. check the contacts where it plugs onto the sensor. it's never the sensor that is bad, it's the contacts on the plug. i have a permanent fix to this problem posted.

your CEL should come on, but i've seen once before where a CEL didn't come on when the CTS was bad.

I can't think of what sensor he would be talking about.

The CTS itself doesn't seem to go bad often, but the connection seems to be the usual problem. grossgary has done some nice write-ups on this problem; I went with his advice and have soldered wires directly to the CTS and put the connector somewheres serrviceable and less prone to corrosion.

well i changed it ,and it seemed to help, + fuel filter ,but it was only 15,000mi old, but the gas station my wife got gas from was 87 octine or less , in the morning i will be able to tell ,thanks

We run 87 octane all of the time without any noticeable issues.

most of us here in EA82 land tend to run high-test, but the rule of thumb is that you should run the lowest octane fuel your engine will tolerate without pinging.

In other words, if she runs fine on 87 octane, then she IS fine on 87 octane. Unfortuantely, this also means that you run 87 octane, and your engine develops a problem, you need to keep the possibility of needing higher octane fuel in mind.

you must remember that around here there is very cheap gas out there , but i do not think it is the gas , john in ky is also suggesting alot of things also , it sure does help when i have a ea82 turbo motor [ blown hg] sitting there with good parts on it ,thanks guys will post today after starting it

car ran great, my question is fpr is it the same from a xt4 turbo to a 88 turbo , i read that there are 2 colors gold or black , is there a difference ?i am thinking it is the black box right ? or any pic would help ,thanks ,

I haven't heard one way or another. The FPR is pretty simple, and the only differences might be attachment details, base pressure, and flowrate (totally guessing here).
