November 14, 200322 yr Not to offend others, but my gosh are all 1987 GL Wagons with 125K on the odometer as gutless as my Hitachi-carb'd baby? Or should I perform a leakdown and comp. on this car? This is a serious question guys, hills seem to pose real problems for my wagon and I am sort of shocked... Many thanks, Jw
November 14, 200322 yr Your engine is in the 80 - 90 HP range stock. If you have anything wrong with it, that goes down. It's very possible that you are down to 50 HP or so if you have low compression, or a weak carb - maybe a plugged cat.... Get a better flowing muffler - that can help. GD
November 14, 200322 yr i just had a vacuum leak and now with that hose plugged in, it has way more get up and go. almost as much as the spfi.
November 14, 200322 yr oh you betcha,(with fargo accent) I loved my 85 carbed D/R wagon. but it just could not pull up the hills. so I got a gl10 turbo. problem solved:D
November 14, 200322 yr Author I am starting a new post: If you had $3,000.00, what Subaru 4WD station wagon would you buy and why? http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7218 John
November 15, 200322 yr Ehhh it depends... sure the carbs hurt up hills... all EA82's do. However... what is your top speed... if you can hit like 80 pretty easy on open freeway you car is probably fine... when my engine was screwed my top speed was like 64 MPH... now its 103... more if I could get some open freeway
November 15, 200322 yr Besides doing a compression test for diagnostic purposes, a good cheap fix to try is to dump in a bottle of carb/fuel injector/valve/combustion chamber cleaner (STP?). Can make a dramatic difference.
November 15, 200322 yr I've driven my friends 87 carbed wagon, and it's about as fast off the line as mine is, but there's no turbo to kick in and make it faster like there is on me :-) She loves mine, but she is afraid with her lead foot that a turbo would get her in trouble :-P You want to talk about gutless, drive my 83 GL-10 I used to have, I remember going over Siskiyou Summit going to Calfornia floored in 3rd gear pulling 55 MPH. Not too bad though, I still managed to get 32 MPG between Albany and Redding, CA (380 miles) Still had 1/8 of a tank too!
