I just pulled my engine to do a clutch job and put on a new alternator someone gave me. After I put it back in and had the engine running, I tried to turn it off and it just kept humming along. I also noticed my battery light was on, and the dash looked like it does when the key is in start with the engine off. It also stayed lit up when I moved the key to acc or off. Any suggestions? This is an 81 hatchback GL.

Try putting your old alternator back on.

I would but the positive post on it disintegrated when i tried to take off the nuts (the whole thing was rusted and corroded so I cut the original wire off and crimped on a new connector)

 

I am going to try to solder on a new wire that just uses those quick connects tomorrow.

Maybe you got an internally regulated alt, and I think for 81, you need an externally regulated one.

That's a possibility... It looked identical. Are the connections the same?
