recent changes with OBW

Featured Replies

i recently had a clutch kit installed in my 96 OBW. new tailshaft seal replaced after rear driveshaft was put back in. garage said it is common for them to leak. they blamed me for over filling case but i did not touch the car, i brought it to them for the repair!! now i have a squeak that is evident at slow speeds and it increases/decreases as the car speeds or slows. does anyone have any ideas as to what this is? thnks for any help.

What does the squeek do when you shift gears, ie depress the clutch?

the noise appears to go away a little as you depress the clutch as my memory goes. it appears more so after driven for a little while. it sounds like rubber squeaking on the driveshaft.

hrmmm could be the center carrier bearing. Thats mounted in rubber.

Could be they didnt install the throw out bearing right.. just some thoughts.

I would have to agree with the throw out bearing (I have no driveshaft experience). If they didn't get it in the clips/holder correctly it will squeak.

I have no experience with the driveshaft. "Knock on wood" if have never had a driveshaft failure. If it is a drive shaft there are a few used driveshafts in yards near you. http://www.interstateautoparts.com/ in Tioga Center has one on their web site for $138 or http://www.s-t-a-r-usedparts.com/ in Beavers Dam has one listed on their site for $74.64.

If they have to pull out the transmission to fix the throw out bearing you might have some resistance as it is a TON of hard work. But with all things of this nature start off with a positive attitude and a belief they will do the right thing. Honest people make honest mistakes.

Good luck,

thanks for the ideas and suggestions. it is my hope this will work out. life seems to throw curve balls at you when you least expect them. my fingers and toes will be crossed on this one as i start a new job this coming week after surgery and the inability to continue in my current job of twelve years. maybe this will be the springboard towards better things to come. again, thanks to you folks for the help.

I'm in the same place you are Rox, so i wish you all the luck in the world, as it isn't doing me any good (you can have my share).

thanks. i did get under the car tonight. it would not squeak with me turning all four tires by hand as well as running the motor and placing the tranny in first gear. quiet as can be actually. squeaking did start as soon as i began driving. a side note, i found my front drivers side cv boot torn as clean as a whistle. i did not see this two weeks back when my car was on the lift. it is still slinging grease so i assume it is a recent failure. could this have anything to do with what is going on? nipper, thanks for the help and extra luck but dont give it all my way. you should hold on to a little for yourself!! thanks for making this forum work for me.

Ok go find a driveshaft shop in the yellow pages. They can help hook you up for much less money. Also contact Jamie

https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/oe_parts_cat.html

and see what she can do.

Can you explain the details of this a little more? Is the carrier bearing a serviceable item or not? Or do you need to replace the entire drive shaft to get the carrier bearing?

In all honesty, i dont know. I have yet to replace one personally. I know when I had the middle uni replaced on my car the front half of the driveshaft came out with no problem. The drive shaft shop replaced the universal.

From having it posted here in the past, I have heard it can go either way.

Right now I have internet issues so I can't give you a firm answer. Call Jamie and ask.
