I suggest looking at both sides. The lowest level is correct. I would confirm if the oil is high. Three inchs is pretty high! If high, drain some to proper level. Dont mess with the mechanic. Just dont go back! Its a stretch to call someone a mechanic if they can't change the oil correctly. The brakes. Try the bed in procedure. Check the www.Stoptech.com site for the procedure.

OK, here is what I needed. Center diff replaced, both front wheel bearings This took care of all of the symptoms I was having. Binding in turns, (center diff) roar when turning to the right on the highway above 40 mph. This also cured the whining I was getting in the tranny. I believe that the center diff was putting everything into a bind. i.e. causing the whine I was getting while rolling. Hats of to the great service I received from the service manager at Beechmont Subaru in Cincinnati. Scott Snyder and his technician took good care of me. I put 1700 miles on the car last week with no problems! Mike

This noise was there before the diff work. I thought it was to the right side at first, but after replacing the right bearings we check both sides and nothing from the right, then loaded the left side with the sensors. I could hear the noise from the left bearing hub, strut tower and tie rod sensors, but not at the level I would expect. The car is still in the shop. Monday morning I will go back and have them check the nut on the right side. We did have one sensor on the left ball joint and did not hear anything signficant. Guess I could check the right. Thanks

Thanks Gary, I have not replaced the tranny. They did replace the center diff. This is not a problem now. They also replaced the right side wheel bearing, and the noise is still there. After this, I drove the car with listening sensors at the left tie rod, bearing hub, and strut tower. (The sensors allow you to listen while driving, to the noise output at each location.) I never hear from the head phones the level of noise I would expect from the bearing. This is why I am thinking axles? But I guess it could still be the left bearings. Mike

Mine is at the dealer now getting this done. I got a call yesterday from the service mgr asking what type of fluid I had in the tranny, because he said a little would leaked out when the drive shaft/viscous coupler was removed. I hope to be able to report that I got my first good shake from a dealer service by the end of the week. Keeping fingers crossed.

If the Fix is done right it will likely last a long time. Not knowing the history is the problem you have. The only way to know is to get into it. (the motor) at that point you might discover you would be better to do the different motor route rather than fix. Lots more money. If you can get the dealer to refund and take the car back that would be best option in my opinion. My first head gasket went at 133K. I have 45k on the new motor with no problems. Knock on wood. My engine is strong and runs well because the guy that did it , did it right. The other key piece to this is knowing the watch outs for this problem. You can chase that by a search after you get your current problem solved.

Tires are all 205/55/16 fresh Dunlop Sport Maxx. 36psi front 35psi rear. Tires have been the same all around for the last 80,000 miles. OK glad to hear you second the wheel bearing. I have an appointment to take to the dealer on Monday. For center diff and check wheel bearings. If I get good work done it will be a first at a Subaru dealer. I will be posting the details when I get the car back. Thanks again guys! Mike

The rear lube was changed in the last month with castrol 75w 90 full synthetic gear lube. up to level The trans fluid was changed last weekend with castrol hypo c gear oil 80w 90. up to level All of the following symptoms were there before the lube changes above. First thing, I am pretty sure I need to replace he center dif. Because it binds when warm and turn in to parking place. not sure if this is causing any of the noise. Second thing, I would call it a whine, and it does change when the speed changes. whether in neutral or in gear, under power or braking. This noise gets louder when it gets hotter. Third thing, is more like a roar when making a slight turn to the right. turning to the left the roar is gone. I can actually feel the roar in the steering wheel. This also seems to get louder when it get hotter. Thanks in advance for the help! Mike

I have a 99 Legacy with 5sp, 176k miles. When rolling down the road there is a whine coming from the front of the car. I can't tell if it is wheel bearings, transmission, or what? If I put it in neutral and coast, the whine is still there. When I turn to the right there is additional whining noise whether under power or coasting. Any ideas what could be causing this? Ways to trouble shoot? Thanks in advance, Mike
